According to Sciencenode.org, researchers are leveraging the power of computer science and engineering to make the planet pollution-free. Climate change and environmental pollution have been hot topics since 1970. One of the major sources of pollution is plastic. Science nodes report that billions of plastic pieces are deep inside the ocean, with a fractional percent of these pollutants floating to the ocean's surface.
In their quest to eliminate marine pollution, a group of researchers led by the oceanographer Erik van Sebille initiated Plastic Adrift. This project is poised to track floating plastics and trace their sources in the ocean. The computer-aided project features technologies that can streamline plastic extraction from oceans since only one percent of plastic contaminants float to the visible surface of water.
Another notable computer-based technology is an eel-like swimming robot called the Envirobot. The creation of Envirobot is motivated by the need to eradicate pollutants from untreated sewage, heavy metals, and agricultural run-off that often end up in rivers and lakes. These contaminants pollute water and endanger aquatic organisms. Envirobot collects and analyses water samples from rivers and lakes. If it detects a pollutant, it can trace the source by following a "current of toxicity" in the water body.
